Charles Plumier (1646-1706) was sent to South America by the French king, Louis
XIV to search for plants. Plumier discovered a flowering shrub and named it Fuchsia
Triphylla flore coccinea. His description of this fuchsia is found in Plumier's
book entitled, Nova Planetarum Americanum Genera (1703). Plumier named the plant
Fuchsia in honour of Dr. Leonart Fuchs (1501-1566).
Not only can Fuchsias be found in South America but also in Tahiti and New Zealand.
The genus consists of about 100 species. Although hybrids and cultivars are in tens
of thousands.
