 Traffic on the lawn causes the soil to compact, which if left unattended will at the least to look poor due to lack of moisture and air to the roots. Lawn aerators are tools that are designed to allow air and moisture to get to the roots of grass that make up your lawn. The garden fork can be used for this purpose and since you are likely to have one in the potting shed then is perhaps the cheapest method. You can also get spiked shoes or shoe covers that have spikes in which will aerate every time you mow the lawn.
